From 2008 to 2016, he was the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology. He was the vice-president and then in 1993-1996 and 1997-2000 the chairman of the board of the State Agency for Restructuring of Coal Mining in Katowice. In the years 2000-2001 he was the Deputy Minister of Economy in the government of prof. Jerzy Buzek, one of the authors of the hard coal mining restructuring programs in Poland.
