From 2008 to 2016, he was the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology. He was the vice-president and then in 1993-1996 and 1997-2000 the chairman of the board of the State Agency for Restructuring of Coal Mining in Katowice. In the years 2000-2001 he was the Deputy Minister of Economy in the government of prof. Jerzy Buzek, one of the authors of the hard coal mining restructuring programs in Poland. His research interests are around power and resistance in organizations and more recently on organizational research methods. His research has been published on international journals such as Organizational Research Methods, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly and he has been a contributor to international volumes edited by Palgrave-Macmillan and Routledge. Gianluigi is currently part of the EGOS Board. He has been Co-chair of the Organizing Committee of the 32nd EGOS Colloquium, held at the University Federico II of Naples in 2016. He was Chair speaker at the Opening Ceremony of the 32nd EGOS Colloquium.
